Between 2012 and 2019, and without any formal training, I learned almost everything I know about the business side of the creative industry ánd the power of creativity when doing business… at Abbey Games - The Dutch indie darling studio behind unexpected strategy game successes like Reus (2013), Renowned Explorers (2015) and Godhood (2019).
Coming in as a friend of co-founder Adriaan Jansen to “do music” for Reus, I later transitioned to producer and even managing director. In those three positions, I’ve seen and touched every aspect of making and marketing video games ánd of building and running a creative, tech-focused entertainment company. A lot went right, probably even more went wrong, but the experience was invaluable.
By the end of 2019, due to the lack of success of Godhood, Abbey Games had to scale down and our shared journey came to an end. Fortunately, the company still exists, doing its thing. And so do I!
In the video below, Adriaan Jansen (current CEO of Abbey Games) and I dive into what went right, and especially what went wrong in the wild ride that was Abbey Games between 2012 and 2019.
